About the Role
The Transfer Station Manager will effectively manage the transfer station, ensuring consistent Health & Safety and Environmental compliance, and delivering first class customer service in line with pre-defined business KPIs. You will promote employee engagement to support continuous improvement in productivity and quality of service provision through ongoing review and improved site profitability, supporting business growth and best in class performance.
This role involves supporting and delivering the growth strategy for the facilities within your remit, focusing on commodity sales and identifying and implementing new and best practices to provide exceptional customer service. Medium term planning (6 to 12 months) in conjunction with regional management based on the Division’s annual Business Plan is required, alongside monitoring and controlling the full P&L budget of the facility.
You will have a degree of autonomy regarding site-specific strategy for growth and development, operating within legislation and company policies. Solutions developed must prioritize Biffa’s health and safety standards for people, customers, and the environment.
This hands-on role requires strong relationship management, negotiation, and people management skills. Innovative thinking and a solution-driven approach are essential. You will build key internal relationships at all levels up to Senior Management across multiple departments, as well as with external organisations.
The role demands the ability to multitask live situations requiring immediate attention while delivering first class customer service.
Key responsibilities include overseeing site adherence to health and safety, security, employee relations, and legislation; ensuring service delivery meets KPIs; driving best practice and continuous improvement in cost control and productivity; supervising, coaching, and training the team to achieve high customer service standards; promoting open communication channels within the Division and wider Biffa business; proactively reviewing all transfer station processes; supporting staff development by identifying and sharing best practices; managing compliance with Health & Safety, Environmental, Employment legislation and Company policies; agreeing, monitoring and managing the full P&L budget with delegated accountability; and working within cross-divisional teams to provide integrated waste solutions through continuous improvement.

Experience
- COTC IOSH Certificate
- Experience as an Operations Manager or in a similar role within Services or Logistics
- People and health & safety management experience in a unionised environment
- Proven track record of working to clearly defined service delivery KPIs
- Proven track record of delivering continuous improvement within an operational/service environment
- P&L management experience (ideally)
- Good transport and logistics knowledge

Qualifications
