About the Role
We are recruiting a Mechanical & Electrical Technician to join our team working on Ring Mains at Merton Wells. In this role, you will use your mechanical and electrical knowledge and experience to inspect, maintain, fault diagnose, test, install, modify, or repair mechanical plant and associated electrical equipment safely, efficiently, and with minimum supervision. Your work will ensure our sites remain operational for the benefit of our customers and actively help reduce pollution from our sites, contributing to Thames Water's environmental impact.
Your key responsibilities will include carrying out scheduled planned maintenance on mechanical and electrical equipment following company procedures to minimise plant breakdowns, investigating plant failures and performing repairs promptly to avoid process interruptions, and providing technical advice and support or training to technical trainees if required. You will work on various equipment such as pumps and associated control gear, 3-phase motors, starters and controls, electronic control systems including VSDs, automatic valves and penstocks, flow, level and pressure measurement devices, programmable logic controllers, variable speed drives and controls, and chemical handling and dosing equipment.
You will also participate in a standby rota following relevant training. All necessary PPE, tools, a company van, and a fuel card will be provided.
Experience
- Time-served electrical apprentice with significant experience in electrical systems working in a true multi-skilled capacity.
- Ideally upskilled with a mechanical qualification to inspect, maintain, fault diagnose, test, install, modify, or repair mechanical and electrical plant equipment safely and efficiently.
- Candidates with only mechanical or electrical experience will be considered for development to dual-skilled status.
- Knowledge and awareness of health and safety issues are essential.
- Physical fitness is required as the role involves working in confined spaces with successful completion of appropriate training.
- A valid driving licence is essential.

Qualifications
- Electrical apprenticeship or equivalent experience.
- ONC/HNC in engineering, NVQ, or City & Guilds Level 3 in Electrical Engineering.
- Mechanical NVQ Level 2 or 3 qualification or willingness to upskill mechanically is crucial.
