We are seeking a Principal level environmental professional to support our Environmental Management and Assessment Team in the UK. Our portfolio spans sectors such as onshore and offshore renewables, aviation, nuclear, and rail. We need people with a creative spirit, a dedicated approach, and solid grounding in environmental design, assessment, and management at any stage of the development project lifecycle.
As one of the largest environmental consultancies in the UK, WSP is involved in some of the most challenging and high-profile projects, from small developments to major national infrastructure schemes. Our Environmental Management and Assessment Team oversees environmental inputs throughout project lifecycles, engaging early at concept and option stages to shape projects that address sensitive environments and communities.
In this role, you will work closely with environmental specialists and other professionals to develop proposals that enhance the environment and communities, building in benefits such as improved habitats, cleaner air and water, lower carbon emissions, and overall environmental gain. You will also support design and construction teams to ensure commitments are met.
The role is ideal for a proactive individual eager to use their initiative to progress their career and influence environmental elements of engineering projects across sectors including rail, highways, energy, and commercial/residential developments, from feasibility through to planning, detailed design, construction, and handover/maintenance.
A typical week may include:
- Providing environmental advice and support to clients, project managers, and colleagues
- Collaborating with diverse environmental specialists, clients, and engineering teams to promote sustainable design and environmental enhancement
- Leading large, complex projects, overseeing technical, quality, commercial, and health and safety performance
- Building client relationships and identifying opportunities for support in resourcing, programming, strategy development, and project delivery
- Developing new client relationships and marketing services, including presenting at conferences
- Securing new work through proposal development, strategic bids, and business development
- Leading and contributing to innovative techniques such as Digital EIA, Technical Excellence, and Future Ready EIA
- Driving performance improvement and career advancement within the team
- Promoting team culture and serving as a 'go to' person for problem solving and achieving goals

- Contributing to the success of WSP's business strategy while being self-motivated towards role and project goals
Experience
- Extensive experience in Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and EIA processes
- Proven ability to work with limited supervision within multidisciplinary teams
- Experience in large-scale infrastructure projects such as rail, highways, energy, and commercial/residential developments
- Comprehensive project management skills including commercial and risk management, forecasting, and quality assurance
- Sound knowledge of relevant environmental and planning legislation
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including report writing and reviewing with strong attention to detail

Qualifications
- Relevant environmental degree level qualification in EIA or similar
- Achieved or demonstrably working towards Chartered Environmental Status and full membership of IEMA or a similar professional body
