About the Role
At WSP, you will have the opportunity to work on landmark projects that make a real difference. We are seeking a Principal or Associate Flood Risk Consultant experienced in managing, coordinating, and delivering flood risk assessment projects. You will lead and direct teams on technically complex projects for a diverse range of clients, working as part of our national Sustainable Water Management team. Your expertise will span flood risk modelling, LLFA technical services, flood management solutions, Water EIA, WFD assessment, permitting applications, geomorphology, and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG). Your main focus will be Flood Risk Assessment for major infrastructure projects in the UK and overseas, with additional involvement in flood modelling, flood management, and Water EIA as appropriate. Your role will combine technical, management, and commercial responsibilities, including mentoring junior colleagues and contributing to the growth of WSP’s technical capability and innovation.
Responsibilities include leading project delivery, managing client and stakeholder interfaces, supervising and reviewing technical inputs, developing business opportunities, managing project budgets and programmes, and ensuring adherence to health and safety standards. You will play a key role in growing the team’s expertise and delivering high-quality outputs that meet client requirements.
Our Liverpool team consists of 8 water environment and flood risk professionals collaborating with regional and national teams. We work on major infrastructure projects such as Mersey Tidal Power, HyNet North West, and East West Rail, serving clients including National Grid, Network Rail, and National Highways, as well as Local Authorities and Lead Local Flood Authorities. Experience
- Proven experience in Flood Risk Assessment preparation and at least one supporting skill such as flood risk modelling, flood risk strategy development, drainage design, or Water EIA, preferably in consultancy.
- Demonstrable leadership or major contribution to technical inputs and teams for successful delivery of planning and permitting projects for major infrastructure, including FRA, Drainage Strategies, Water EIA, DCO examinations, planning inquiries, and environmental permits.
- Track record of delivering complex, high-profile projects, including experience with the Development Consent Order planning regime for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects in the UK.
- Excellent knowledge of UK flood risk planning regulations.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a successful history of managing client and stakeholder relationships.
- Practical project management experience, including budget and team management, with the ability to handle challenging projects.

Qualifications
- Degree in a relevant environmental, geographical, science, or engineering discipline.
- Chartered status with C.WEM, CEnv, CSci, or CEng is essential.
