About the Role
Arcadis is the world's leading company delivering sustainable design, engineering, and consultancy solutions for natural and built assets. With over 34,000 people across more than 30 countries, we are dedicated to improving quality of life by solving complex challenges and delivering impactful results together.
Our paid Intern & Placement programme offers a hands-on insight into the work we do, helping you develop skills and knowledge within civil engineering. Supported by targeted training and mentoring, you will gain both technical expertise and personal development aligned with Arcadis’ core values.
During your 10–12-week internship or 12-month placement, you will be exposed to real projects and clients, working alongside diverse multidisciplinary teams. You will contribute to projects ranging from local schemes to major international developments, complementing your academic learning.
Using advanced software and digital tools such as Civil 3D, OpenRoads, and BIM, you will design new infrastructure and assess existing assets for repair or reuse. You will gain hands-on experience across highways, rail, energy, and water sectors, applying your knowledge to real-world challenges.
You will learn about project delivery models, contracts, and commercial constraints while collaborating with other disciplines and attending site visits to ensure your designs are safe, buildable, and sustainable.
Civil engineers at Arcadis play a central role in tackling the climate emergency by delivering resilient, low-carbon solutions that maximize environmental, social, and economic impact.
In highways and transportation, you will help shape the future of transport infrastructure by designing safe, sustainable, and innovative solutions including roads, junctions, bridges, and active travel routes. Your work may include foundations, earthworks, retaining structures, or drainage systems.
In rail, you will design and deliver infrastructure supporting the railway network, including stations, bridges, utility crossings, drainage, and support structures. You will work in a safety-critical environment, integrating designs that meet strict rail standards and health and safety requirements.
Your contributions will impact the reliability and sustainability of rail transport, gaining experience across all project stages from concept to construction on UK and international projects.
The programme also involves some site visits and inspections, providing a comprehensive understanding of project delivery and real-world engineering challenges.
Experience
You will be working towards a degree in a relevant subject. Roles within Highways and Transportation are open to candidates with either a BEng or MEng in Civil or Structural Engineering. Roles within Rail require you to be working towards an MEng in Civil or Structural Engineering.
About you
You demonstrate resilience, creativity, analytical thinking, and are a team player. You have excellent communication skills and can use your technical knowledge to influence and consult stakeholders. You are willing to travel and stay away from home when required, and comfortable with site-based working when necessary.
Qualifications
You will be actively pursuing a relevant engineering degree and have a strong desire to develop your skills in sustainable civil engineering solutions.
