About the Role
SLR Consulting Limited is seeking an experienced professional to join our large team of water specialists delivering hydraulic modelling and flood risk studies using industry standard software such as Tuflow, Flood Modeller Pro, and HEC-RAS. This role requires strong project and team management skills, technical mentorship, and a working knowledge of 1D-2D hydraulic modelling, hydrological modelling, and GIS-based analytical tools, alongside a thorough understanding of the UK regulatory regime.
You will lead a team of flood modellers, hydrologists, drainage and flood management engineers, and EIA practitioners, collaborating with hydrogeologists, geomorphologists, and geochemists. While primarily focused on UK flood modelling projects, there are opportunities to work across SLR’s Europe, Middle East, and Africa region and to expand modelling capabilities in water quality and catchment-based studies.
Key responsibilities include managing project delivery, resourcing, budgets, proposals, and bids, providing technical and interpersonal support, and mentoring junior staff. You will ensure adherence to technical design procedures, UK policy and regulatory standards, and quality assurance processes. Leading a culture of safety, health, and well-being within the team is essential.
The role involves leading or collaborating on multi-disciplinary projects of varying sizes, applying advanced analytical and GIS skills (QGIS and ArcGIS), and signing off detailed project reports and technical notes. Occasionally, you may challenge published flood mapping extents or present expert testimony at Public Inquiries or Hearings supporting Development Consent Order applications.
SLR offers a collaborative and supportive environment with a comprehensive benefits package including competitive salaries, company pension, healthcare, travel and life insurance, flexible and hybrid working options, and a structured career framework with regular reviews and progression opportunities.
Experience
Minimum of 10 years relevant experience in hydraulic and flood risk modelling. Proven track record liaising with the Environment Agency and Scottish Environment Protection Agency to address flood risk issues, typically for built environment and power sector clients. Strong proficiency with the Tuflow suite of programmes, including building, debugging, and presenting modelling results. Experience managing multi-disciplinary teams and projects, including resourcing, budgeting, and bid management. Previous experience presenting expert testimony at Public Inquiries or Hearings is advantageous.
About You
Strong leadership and project management skills with the ability to mentor and develop junior staff. Excellent technical knowledge of hydraulic design procedures, hydrology, flood risk management, and UK regulatory standards. Proficient in GIS data management with excellent working knowledge of QGIS and ArcGIS. Commitment to promoting a culture of safety, health, and well-being. Ability to produce and sign off detailed technical reports and guide junior staff in technical writing.
A full current UK driving licence is required due to occasional site visits and client meetings. Candidates who are seeking agile or part-time working arrangements, or those returning to work, are encouraged to apply.
Qualifications
Ideally chartered or working towards chartership with ICE or CIWEM. Relevant academic qualifications in engineering, hydrology, or related disciplines are expected.
