About the Role
At WSP, you will have the opportunity to work on landmark projects worldwide, collaborating with the brightest minds in your field. As Technical Director within the UK and Ireland Mine Waste team, you will provide technical leadership, project direction, business development, and client liaison. You will lead and contribute to the design and assessment of mine waste facilities including tailings facilities, water storage facilities, waste rock dumps, and integrated waste facilities from concept through to operational and closure phases.

Your responsibilities will include managing multi-disciplinary design teams, project management activities such as proposals, cost estimates, client reporting, and project closure. You will support and develop client relationships, actively seek new business opportunities, and contribute to team strategy development.

Safety is paramount; you will promote a ‘safety first’ culture aligned with WSP’s health, safety and wellbeing policies. You will provide specialised technical input on tailings management, heap leach facilities, water impoundments, waste rock dump design, soil mechanics, soil improvement methods, geosynthetics, and related civil engineering projects globally.

Leading and mentoring a team of scientists, engineers, and professionals, you will support their career development, technical excellence, and commercial awareness. You will also participate in global corporate technical practice groups to elevate technical standards and client visibility.

Requirements

Experience
- Demonstrated technical leadership, collaboration, and delivery in mine waste and tailings.
- Substantial experience managing large, multi-disciplinary projects on time and budget.
- Proven ability in client service and business development.
- Experience with national and international design guidelines and regulations.
- Mining and geotechnical experience related to mine waste disposal and facilities.
- Ability to interpret monitoring results and design geotechnical structures.
- Experience working effectively within team environments.

- Willingness to travel within the UK and internationally, including remote locations.

Qualifications
- Degree qualified in civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, or engineering geology with strong soil mechanics expertise.
- Chartered professional status with a relevant body.
- Knowledge of soil mechanics, soil improvement methods, and geosynthetics engineering.
