About the Role
At WSP, you will have the opportunity to work on landmark projects worldwide, contributing your expertise to the kind of work the world needs. As Technical Director for the UK and Ireland Mine Waste team, you will provide technical leadership, project direction, business development, and client liaison within the mining waste and tailings sector. You will lead multi-disciplinary design teams and manage the technical delivery of projects including tailings facilities, water storage, waste rock dumps, and integrated waste facilities from concept through to operational and closure phases.
Your responsibilities will include project management tasks such as drafting proposals, cost estimates, client reporting, and project closure, supported by the project management team. You will actively develop and maintain client relationships and seek new business opportunities. You will also contribute to team strategy development and promote a ‘safety first’ culture aligned with WSP’s health, safety, and wellbeing policies.
Providing specialised technical input, you will focus on tailings management, heap leach facilities, water impoundments, waste rock dump design, soil mechanics, soil improvement methods, geosynthetics, and related civil engineering projects worldwide. You will lead, mentor, and support a team of scientists, engineers, and professionals to foster their career development, technical excellence, and commercial awareness. Participation in global corporate technical practice groups will help elevate WSP’s technical excellence and client visibility.

Experience
- Demonstrated technical leadership, collaboration, and delivery skills
- Substantial and broad experience in mine waste and tailings management
- Proven track record delivering large, multi-disciplinary projects on time and on budget
- Experience in project management including proposals, client liaison, and reporting
- Knowledge of national and international design guidelines and regulations related to mine waste disposal and facilities

Qualifications
- Degree qualified in civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, or engineering geology with strong emphasis and proven ability in soil mechanics
- Chartered professional status with a relevant body
