About the Role
Wood is seeking an experienced and driven Consultant Ecologist to join our highly experienced and friendly ecology team. This role offers an excellent opportunity to progress your consultancy career, suitable for consultants looking to grow or experienced assistant consultants seeking the next step. You will support the delivery of exciting and varied projects across multiple sectors including transport, nuclear, power, waste, minerals, and property. The Wood ecology team comprises around 70 specialists providing high quality ecological services on complex projects, with a strong focus on the energy transition, renewables, and circular economy.

Key Responsibilities
You will work closely with ecology team members and colleagues from other disciplines to design and deliver high-standard ecological surveys. Responsibilities include acting as task manager and lead surveyor, technical report writing, developing project management skills, business development, and assisting in training junior team members. Specific duties include designing and conducting ecological surveys for protected species (bats, reptiles, badgers, great crested newts, water vole), task managing survey delivery, conducting extended Phase 1 and UK Habitats surveys, collating and reviewing ecological information for desk studies, producing reports and mapping including baseline reports and mitigation strategies, supporting Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA) delivery, assisting senior staff with proposals and bids, and acting as an Ecological Clerk of Works.
Experience
- Experience working in an ecology-related role
- Designing, undertaking, and leading ecological surveys for protected species
- Conducting extended Phase 1 and UK Habitats surveys
- Acting as an Ecological Clerk of Works
- Writing and delivering high quality technical reports such as baseline reports, preliminary ecological appraisals, and ecological mitigation strategies
- Willingness to stay away overnight and work away from home
- Clean, full UK driving licence

Driven and motivated ecologist with strong technical skills and a collaborative approach. You are keen to develop project management and business development skills and enjoy working within a supportive team environment. You are adaptable and willing to travel as required by project needs.
Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree in ecology or related discipline
- Good working knowledge of environmental legislation and planning policy
- Membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM)
Preferred
- One or more protected species licences
- MSc or PhD in ecology or related field
- Experience in Ecological and Environmental Impact Assessments (EcIA/EIA)
- Experience in project/task management of small to mid-scale projects
