About the Role
The Senior Control Engineer will be based in the SP Energy Networks (SPEN) district offices in Birkenhead, reporting to the Control Room Manager within Customer Service. You will be responsible for the control and operation of the SP Manweb electrical networks under normal, outage, and fault conditions. Leading a team, you will manage safety, system integrity, customer service, and coordination of system access while ensuring compliance with the Distribution Licence.

As SPEN transitions to become a Distribution System Operator (DSO), this role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the future distribution network strategy, ensuring exceptional customer service, network security, and access to flexible energy resources.

Key responsibilities include:
- Operating the network safely and efficiently in accordance with Operational Procedures and Safety Rules
- Facilitating change within Customer Services Delivery as networks transition to Net Zero
- Working with partners to utilize flexibility service arrangements
- Reviewing and investigating system performance after major incidents and faults
- Providing technical advice and support related to the network
- Managing operational interfaces with NESO, NGET, other DNOs, and large industrial customers
- Approving and controlling outage and network access requests for 132 & 33 kV networks
- Coordinating outage planning and liaison with internal and external parties
- Implementing and managing Electricity System Restoration (ESR) procedures and liaising with Transmission System Operators and power stations
- Controlling power system defence mechanisms including demand reduction under OC6, ESEC, and low frequency events
- Managing customer service proactively to meet KPIs
- Participating in business and organisational change to maintain or improve performance and service standards
- Implementing Contingency & Emergency Plans and escalating significant incidents
- Completing statutory reports and paperwork for network incidents
- Monitoring CML outage requests to minimise system impact
- Supporting operational IT systems accuracy and process improvements
- Leading safety and customer service culture improvements
- Line managing a small team, overseeing training, development, and performance

Requirements

Experience
- HNC with relevant experience or Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
- Previous Control Room knowledge/experience (advantageous)
- Detailed distribution and/or transmission network knowledge
- Operational experience at 33 kV and above (advantageous)
- PowerOn/SCADA experience (advantageous)

- Skilled in interpretation of asset data and post-fault analysis
- Ability to define and document new processes for strategic changes
- Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental legislation
- Developed negotiation, communication, influencing, and people management skills
- Knowledge of transmission and/or distribution systems and outage planning
- Effective decision maker, able to lead when required

Qualifications
- HNC or Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
- Relevant operational and control room experience preferred
