About the Role
As Senior Environmental Sustainability Manager at Balfour Beatty, you will provide strategic and operational leadership across multiple projects or regions, driving the delivery of the Building New Futures strategy. This role involves leading teams, managing senior stakeholder relationships, and embedding sustainability into business planning and performance.

You will lead the development and implementation of the Environmental Sustainability Strategy and Bridging the Gap plans, ensuring alignment with Building New Futures commitments. You will oversee Environmental Sustainability teams, fostering a #OneTeam culture with effective resource planning, capability development, and succession.

Promoting a sustainable mindset across the group, you will engage and inspire individuals to embed sustainability into their functions and behaviours. You will provide strategic sustainability expertise to business units and project teams, supporting work winning, operational delivery, and innovation.

Key responsibilities include representing sustainability in bid responses and client engagements, driving cultural change by embedding sustainability into business-as-usual processes and the Business Management System (BMS), leading internal assurance activities, supporting external audits, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, ISO14001, BMS, and company policies.

You will oversee governance processes, drive continuous improvement of compliance performance, develop training and action plans to address recurring issues, and ensure compliance and performance data informs strategic decision-making and reporting.

Additionally, you will contribute to business unit communications by sharing sustainability insights and opportunities for improvement, plan and manage environmental sustainability resourcing, and encourage reporting of good practice and near misses using the Observation App.

Requirements

Experience
- Leading and managing area-wide sustainability teams
- Driving cultural change and continuous improvement
- Leading internal assurance and audit programmes and governance improvements
- Supporting senior leadership team communications and decision-making
- Developing and implementing area-wide sustainability improvement plans
- Understanding environmental legislation and trends in construction
- Experience with business strategy and sustainability alignment
- Knowledge of governance processes and performance reporting

About You
You are a strategic thinker with strong leadership skills and the ability to inspire and embed sustainability across diverse teams and projects. You understand global mega-trends and their impact on sustainability transformation, and how environmental limits and equalities support economic growth and sustainable capital. You are confident in managing complex stakeholder relationships and driving compliance and continuous improvement in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications
- Degree in an environmental or sustainability-related field preferred
- Registered Environmental Practitioner (REnvP) preferred, or working towards Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv)
