About the Role
As a Site Ecologist at Balfour Beatty, you will manage the Ecology Permitting system and provide Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) services to operations teams. This includes conducting watching briefs, onsite ecological assessments, nesting bird checks, and advising on exclusion zones. You will act as the main point of contact for subcontractors on site, including ECoWs, specialists, habitat creation, and vegetation clearance operatives. Collaborating closely with the Biodiversity Lead, you will assist in auditing habitat loss and creation. You will actively contribute to fostering a culture of continual improvement in on-site ecological practices that are solution-oriented to support construction teams.

Key Responsibilities
Reporting to the Balfour Beatty Ecology Area Lead, your key activities will include:
- Providing pragmatic advice and site support to operational teams on ecological requirements
- Developing and supporting the implementation of ecological requirements, including delivering toolbox talks and briefings to site teams and conducting watching briefs
- Building and maintaining relationships with design and internal teams
- Supporting site compliance with ecological legislation and coaching construction teams on applying controls and mitigations in pragmatic, cost-effective ways
- Supporting investigations and reporting on ecological incidents
- Undertaking habitat suitability assessments and protected species surveys as required

Experience
- Good knowledge of ecological management and mitigation
- Good understanding of ecological legislation for development
- Good understanding of environmental management for construction sites
- Experience in utilities, construction, or engineering operating environments is advantageous
- Experience working on large scale infrastructure construction projects is desirable

About You
- Full UK driver’s licence and flexibility to travel
- Ability to build strong working relationships and provide pragmatic ecological advice
- Solution-oriented mindset to support construction teams and improve ecological practices

Qualifications
- Educated to degree or Masters level in Ecology or related subject is desirable
- At least one protected species survey licence is desirable
- CIEEM Membership is desirable
