About the Role
Balfour Beatty is a leading infrastructure company delivering key low carbon projects including public transport networks, renewable energy grid connections and nuclear power stations. As part of the UK’s commitment to the Government's Net Zero Strategy, we are recruiting a Sustainable Procurement Manager to embed sustainability into the Lower Thames Crossing supply chain, a National Highways low carbon Pathfinder Project.

Reporting into the Procurement Function with support from the Group Responsible Sourcing Function, you will work closely with Sustainability, Procurement and Commercial teams to implement sustainability initiatives aligned with our Building New Futures strategy and client project requirements focused on carbon reduction.

Your responsibilities will include leading sustainable procurement in tenders, contracts and programme deliverables, increasing awareness of responsible sourcing across teams, engaging with clients to align objectives and KPIs, and driving supply chain carbon reduction and innovation.

Key activities include acting as the Responsible Sourcing lead for the Lower Thames Crossing Roads North team, coordinating procurement tenders for carbon reducing commodities, applying Balfour Beatty policies consistently, providing sustainability expertise in client and supply chain forums, supporting steel decarbonisation efforts, and delivering training to procurement and project teams.

You will build strong relationships with suppliers, clients and internal stakeholders, acting as a trusted advisor on responsible sourcing, ethical sourcing, modern slavery, social impact and carbon matters.

This role requires strong knowledge of sustainable procurement standards such as ISO 20400, ResponsibleSteel, BES6001, and the Construction Leadership Council’s 5 Client Carbon Commitments, as well as expertise in carbon reporting, PAS 2080, Environmental Product Declarations and whole life carbon assessment.

Experience
- Knowledge of UK and Regional Government sustainable procurement legislation
- Experience working with complex commercial supply chains and procurement functions
- Strong understanding of social, ethical and environmental sustainability issues
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
- Business mindset with commercial awareness
- Proficiency in IT and adaptability to new IT platforms
- Willingness to travel UK wide

Qualifications
- Relevant qualifications in environmental sustainability (preferable)
- ISEP or CIPS Membership (or equivalent) is desirable
