About the Role
The Senior Control Engineer role is based within the SP Energy Networks (SPEN) Control Room located in Birkenhead. Reporting to the Control Room Manager and sitting within Customer Service, you will be responsible for the control and operation of the SP Manweb electrical networks under normal, outage, and fault conditions. This role involves leading a team to manage safety, system integrity, customer service, and coordination of system access while ensuring compliance with the Distribution Licence.

As SPEN transitions to become a Distribution System Operator (DSO), this position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the future distribution network strategy, ensuring exceptional customer service, network security, and access to flexible energy resources.

Key responsibilities include ensuring safe and efficient network operation in accordance with Operational Procedures and Safety Rules, facilitating change to support the Net Zero transition, managing outage planning and network access requests for 132 & 33 kV networks, and coordinating with multiple stakeholders including NESO, NGET, other DNOs, and large industrial customers.

You will also be responsible for implementing Electricity System Restoration (ESR) procedures, managing power system defence mechanisms, proactively managing customer service KPIs, participating in business change initiatives, and leading a small team by overseeing their training, development, and performance.

This role requires active involvement in improving processes, safety culture, and customer service standards across the team and operations business.

Experience
- Previous Control Room knowledge/experience is advantageous
- Detailed distribution and/or transmission network knowledge
- Operational experience at 33 kV and above is advantageous
- Experience with PowerOn/SCADA systems is advantageous
- Proven ability to coordinate complex tasks and develop IT solutions
- Interpretation of asset data and post-fault analysis of plant and equipment
- Experience managing operational interfaces with multiple parties

Qualifications
- HNC with relevant experience or Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
- Working knowledge of SPEN policies, procedures, and working practices
- Developed knowledge of transmission and/or distribution systems and outage planning
