About the Role
As a key member of the SPT Strategic Portfolio Leadership team, you will share accountability with peers for the development and delivery of the UK’s critical transmission reinforcement projects. This portfolio is high value and complex, with a total value of approximately £3.75 billion+, urgently required to meet the UK’s Net Zero target.

You will drive the development of all large super grid transmission projects, ensuring key milestones for land, planning, and consenting activities are achieved to meet delivery timescales. The role covers all large development projects in the Strategic Portfolio aligned with East & West delivery pipelines ranging from 275kV to 400kV. Projects include new overlines, new substations, and upgrading existing infrastructure to enable greater renewable energy capacity to flow to UK demand centres.

Your responsibilities will include defining leadership and management allocation for individual projects/programmes based on investment level, resource utilisation, location, complexity, and risk. You will be accountable for consenting, land, and commercial contract strategy and lead a Strategic Portfolio Development team of approximately 25-30 permanent staff, alongside managing a large number of key strategic EPC partners and indirect management of circa 200+ personnel.

You will ensure effective risk management to deliver projects on budget and schedule, including sharing risks with EPC partners and managing commercial risks on open book contracts. Driving opportunities to accelerate timelines in line with OFGEM ASTI frameworks and incentives will be key.

Establishing and operating a robust governance framework across the development portfolio is essential to ensure compliance with regulatory and company reporting and approval processes. You will maintain comprehensive records of key risks, issues, actions, and decisions to support regulatory investigations if necessary.

Budget management across the portfolio, developing strong relationships with senior internal and external stakeholders including government officials, agencies, local authorities, other TOs, OFGEM, NESO, and EPC partners, will be critical.

Leading, developing, and motivating a high-performing team with a strong delivery and commercial focus is required. You will hold project management teams accountable for critical milestones in planning, consenting, and land acquisitions, driving statutory processes and public consultation ahead of critical paths.

Compliance with all management systems for professional and efficient delivery of the investment programme, including Health and Safety, Environmental, and Quality management, is mandatory.

You will lead continuous improvement initiatives within Project Development processes and support wider organisational improvements to enhance project outcomes. Additionally, you will manage transmission connections customers to ensure in-service dates are on track and customer securities align with contracting liabilities.
