About the Role
The Head of Programmes / Project Director is a senior leadership role within SP Transmission, responsible for delivering strategic transmission investment programmes focused on accelerating delivery while maintaining industry-leading standards. This role involves managing a project portfolio valued between £150m and £600m, with an annual CAPEX of approximately £100m. You will lead a team of around 40 permanent staff plus 15 agency personnel, overseeing all aspects of project delivery including leadership of project units and support staff.
As a key member of the senior management team, you will contribute to the overall leadership of the SPT Licence Business, including setting business performance targets, fostering effective team collaboration, and shaping the staff culture to meet current and future needs. You will be responsible for strategic planning, price control business plans, and ensuring compliance with regulatory reporting and management systems.
Your responsibilities will include leading large-scale onshore transmission projects with significant stakeholder interest, ensuring capital investments are delivered efficiently and effectively according to specifications, budgets, and timetables, while achieving the highest standards of health, safety, quality, and environmental performance. You will manage relationships with key suppliers, contractors, and stakeholders, applying commercial expertise to drive value and resolve disputes.
Additional duties include coordinating programme delivery activities and risks, providing strong commercial leadership, managing capital budgets, ensuring seamless project closeout and transfer to Operations, and contributing to innovation and value engineering across the investment programme.
Experience
- Minimum 5 years of extensive project management experience within a complex, capital-intensive environment (CAPEX of £20m+ per year)
- Proven success managing large-scale, complex investment programmes and portfolio-level governance
- Solid understanding of EPC delivery models and ability to manage complex contractor and stakeholder interfaces
- Extensive commercial knowledge related to engineering construction in the UK
- Experience leading large professional teams and building collaborative partnerships
- Strong knowledge of health, safety, and environmental legislation, including CDM Regulations and management system standards
- Good knowledge of formal planning and consenting processes for major infrastructure developments
About you
- Degree qualified in Engineering or a related discipline, preferably with a project management qualification
- Accomplished project manager with a track record of delivering complex programmes aligned with strategic priorities such as Net Zero targets
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills with the ability to engage influential customers and stakeholders
- Excellent decision-making skills with the ability to manage multiple competing priorities
- Highly developed planning, organisational, and reporting capabilities
- Commercially astute with the ability to navigate policy, regulatory, and commercial complexities
Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Engineering or a similar discipline required
- Supplementary project management qualification preferred
- Line management experience essential
